I imagine most of us know who the original Laverton, Matravers and Phipps were - after whom many local buildings and roads have been named.  But what was the origin of other places - like Maristow Street or Edward Street?

Who/what was Maristow or Edward?

Anyone with any other places, feel free to join in..  Smiley

Maristow was Sir Manasseh Lopes' home village in Cornwall - he named the street after it (his manor house is still there, of course).

Don't know who Edward was - probably King Edward the Elder, as he was King Alfred's son and it would go with Alfred Street.  Just an educated guess.

Haynes Road is named after a local landowner, who was influential enough to get the  proposed new road re-routed to be further from his house - Bella Vista House, now a solicitor's office.

I don't think anyone knows why Snappersnipes is so called.

Leighton could be added to that surname list  Smiley .

There are several sellers on ebay and there is also a stall in Salisbury that offers to 'research' and print your family coat of arms for 10-20 notes.

The trick is that they only have around 6 slight variations on a theme and you get the next one out of the hat and they just print your name on it which you hang on your front room wall and look a right dick to those in the know. More fun is when 2 people from the same family name get 2 different 'coat of arms' from the seller.

The ebay ones you can have fun with by making up a totally ficticous family name, - say 'Grubenscneider' - and asking them if they can supply the coat of arms for it. Of course they can!

Here's one:-
