Sorry about dragging up this subject but I have such a big moan as my grey bin rubbish won't be collected for another week. I have an overflowing bin and a house full of people. What do I do with a further week's rubbish? Eat it! The fortnightly collection is a pain at the best of times but right now it's driving me potty. Green bin emptied today with hardly anything in it to empty! Crazy system!

my green bin has been collected today even though it says quite clearly on the panflet delivered by the council that it will be next Tuesday. the poor bin man said he had had loads of ear ache from people. Was just lucky i saw him coming as very few bins were put out.

surely if a plan is made it requires sticking to?

I would suggest that people need to plan what they put in the grey bin more carefully, so that stuff which is less urgent for disposal (eg. non-bio degradeable materials) should be stored for the following collection or whenever a space is left in the bin on a collection day in the future.

So all people need to  prophesise is on which collection day the bin men will have room for a correct and proper rubbish collection? Until then keep it all in the house stuffed in wardrobes and under the bed..... I've never heard so much rubbish(!) The agencies are fully aware that Xmas means extra rubbish and if anyone should plan ahead it is them.

What is wrong with black bags next your wheelie bin? For storage of rubbish I mean.

Give the guys a break, they work their ariss off collecting your rubbish all year, they deserve a Xmas break don't they?!

RTT,

This is a round the twist interpretation of what I actually wrote.

And if there isn't any room for the rubbish on the big day THEN shove it in the wardrobe and under the bed? Yes, I see, mind you a single person with no kids at home would have very different rubbish disposal needs themselves and so might not be able to understand the problem properly as faced by families. To give just one example, the amount of disposable nappies used can vary greatly.

Yes CC it is a hard undesirable job and I wouldn't dream of giving the collection crews themselves anything other than the utmost credit. The problem is (as usual) with the administration.

I wonder if they were on "job & finish today" as they were gone like greased lightening when they noticed there were no bins about  Grin
When I caught up with them I was ordered to "leave it on the corner and we'll try to empty it"  Cheesy
Before xmas it would have been slightly different Im sure... Xmas tips in the offing  Grin
Never mind, it's done now  applause

Just bear in mind, these men do a revolting job most people would refuse to do, they are hard working and reliable. They have little extra in terms of man power DESPITE the ever increasing population in the Town. Their pay is terrible considering their working conditions and they nearly always work hours way off what they are contracted for.

It is as RTT says the powers to be that are to blame. The men themselves get very little gratitude or reward for doing such a horrible job.

I agree that the men need their Christmases as well. I was also aware that today was GREEN bin day. My moan was simply miss out GREEN just for once and collect everybody's GREY bins, many of which are overflowing. At this time of year, two weeks is too long to wait for junk to be removed.

One harmless little perk that was stopped a few years back was for the binmen to collect old copper pipe, car batteries etc on their round and drop it off at the scrap yard for their beer money on the way back to the depot.

Obviously the council need the scrap money for themselves these days Wink

I suspect it will have a lot to do with Polish and other Europeans being keen to work hard at very competitive rates before going back home with more money than they could hope to earn locally where they come from.

You didn't do the equation properly Russell:-

+ cost of Unemployment Benefit for people who live in the UK and are put out of work who cannot afford to work for £1 an hour as unlike the influx of East European immigrants they have to pay UK prices for fuel, food, rent and mortgages.

Of course if - as I suspect - what you REALLY mean is that we should go back to Dickensian labour (and conditions) and that wages should be REDUCED to this £1 an hour that is a totally different argument.

Note:- This is NOT the fault of the immigrants, the blame for this mess rests firmly with the government.

Health and safety rules and strict new regulations about how such things must be recycled mean that thse specialist items must be dealt with as specialist items.

Yeah I know, it was tongue-in-cheek (but historically true)

The minimum wage is not £1. I don't know what the wages will be.

I didn't say it was! I said how much these people work for!! Look at the Cockle Pickers report.

It is a FACT that immigrants are working for as little as £1 an hour. Sometimes less.

You yourself said that the current contractors had staff dispute problems and that the new contractors would probably be employing Polish immigrants. How exactly is employing immigrants instead of indigenous people going to help except by paying them less?

Russell calm down, i do not think for one min RTT is out of order in what he says.

We all know there are many immigrants working for pittance.  That is not to say any reputable firms would do such a thing, but it is fact that the scenario exists.
