in a 100 years will it really matter

« on: October 04, 2011, 17:39:47 »

I feel now a little more justified in having a rant in view of some of the comments on the forums< PLUS someone asks what is happening to this forum.
Last Thursday or maybe Friday i returned from an early appointment in Trowbridge only to have to return to Blandford via Westbury to pick up some meeting material. From Tesco at Fore Street it took 30 mins to get to Hospital Road, Why, ?, Because the school children were having a sponsored walk over the Salisbury Downs and all the students were being escorted across the road at the bottom of hospital rd, by four policemen.... So excuse me Mr Councillor that so vehemently argued the case of sighting the pelican crossing at the Cedars, was this not used!!!
Four officers supportinf an army of kids and a £35000 crossing 50 yards up the road not used,   .......as it ever hardly is

Dorian , you have always had an Issue with this crossing as it is placed at the back of your house and you have wined that the lights flash in your windows ! at the end of the day this place as I have said many times before was chosen by qualified wiltshire Council officers who have all the relevant qualifications to asses where the best place to have a crossing, this was done with all due consideration , and the safety of people using this crossing , and also road users taken into account. the amount of residents supported this crossing an signed a petition for this crossing and was also an Are board Issue number 1 , when we as the board asked the general public what their main Issues where they wanted the area board to deal with first. I am sorry that you do not agree with this crossing outside of your house , but it is there to stay , saying it is not used much is your opinion  , I could also say the same about the crossing outside my house but then again I'm at work most of the time so could not make such an assumption correctly .

I have also questioned the location of the crossing on Warminster Road, I live no where near it so have no axe to grind either way. The crossing on Haynes Road is used on a very regular basis it's very rare to drive on that stretch during the day and not have to stop. I have never seen the Warminster Road crossing used, despite driving the road a couple of times a day.

To accept without question the decision of Wltshire Council officials is a bit naive. After all these are the same people who think overtaking up and down Black Dog Hill is a good idea.

The crossing was mentioned in our house too! we came up from Chalford went over the crossing by the Cedars NOT ONE CHILD IN SIGHT,---so much for the route the youngsters were going to take from school ie up Green Lane and onto Warminster Road across the crossing and up Wellhead Lane-----and as we travelled on down towards the Hospital Road it was like Barnhams Fair, all hell let loose, youngsters all over the place and Support officers seeing them across on the way back from their walk.

my children use it every day and it certainly helps to cross a very busy road. why would someone argue about something that could save a childs life??

Are these the same qualified officers who f^*£$d up the bypass?

Have you considered the possibility that it was the police/hobby bobbies that requested they use that route?

Either way I wouldn't of thought it practical for several hundred children to attempt to cross what is a very busy road via a pelican crossing no matter where it was sighted.

Dorian after investigating your claims that officers where used to help pupils over the road , I will clarify no police officers where used in this sponsered walk by Matravers students , the people you saw in high visibility jackets where in fact school staff , they took the option of crossing where they did , as if over 2000 children all pushing the button on the pelican crossing would have entailed tailbacks for miles around by pupils all waiting for each time they waited for the crossing to go green , perhaps you may have prefered this option , but the school staff took the correct decision to do what they did.At the end of the day , it was a good day for the students and staff to raise money for charity and a ten mile long walk is highly commendable which at only happens once a year, for the students , i applaud them for doing so.

Perhaps Dorian you refer to highly qualified officers as Idiots from Wiltshire council , these highly skilled people live within our community and are extremely experienced in dealing with where to place road alter artions and crossings , they are not councillors or politically elected individuals , And to be honest I find you saying that staff at Wiltshire council are idiots offensive, very much the reverse , these people are doing a very hard job and doing it correctly and advising us councillors on the correct locations to place these crossings, whether some like it or not.

Well one FACT springs to mind when we went up Warminster Road in the morning there were Support Officers there and they had blue uniforms on, when we came back in the afternoon the people were wearing High Vis jackets so as is stated they were teachers, but trying to turn right in to Hospital Road and hundreds of youngsters milling about everywhere you dont have time to admire the scenery
