Drove into High st carpark this Saturday afternoon 4pm, and was shocked! two cars parked up. Then realised the new carpark charges had come into force, having to pay a 40p ticket to collect a prescription! (lesson learnt) The town, not suprising, dead quiet!. Isn't this really going to effect local trade? Perhaps with the revenue the councils make out of this, they could afford a new street cleaner for the town. The pavements outside some of the shops are in a disgusting state, Fag butts galore!!

Free parking is only available in the Supermarkets and, of course, for the staff at County hall!

I meant Westbury, has the free parking ceased in our car parks? if so, then that is the end of our little high street.

Spanner just to clarify for you yesterday , was an extremley busy day in our High street , and up till around 3pm the car park was full all day , as a trader no one likes parking charges , but in reality trade has not suddenly ceased , but has carried on the same with no drop in takings , In our High street there are a few shop keepers who have always moaned about trade one month its this and the next its that , they generally like moaning their trade is suffering , whilst they close and open whenever they want to and they dont follow the times they display they are open !
At county Hall during the long budget debate , The Devizes Guardians placed an ammendendment to their parking charges and where backed by all the Independents , their argument was they didnt want parking charges full stop, the letters sent from their car parking committee where also unanswered just like Westbury's , the vote was defeated Instantly by the majority Conservatives, If the Devizes Guardians had got their s through Westbury was the next ammendment to be tabled by myself , hence they didnt so we now have parking charges. these are tiered charges based on bands with Westbury being second from the botton of the List and the second lowest within Wiltshire.
What does annoy me most is people dont like these things Implemented by the Tory controlled council then when an election comes up they go out and vote conservative ! In our last town by-election we had the 2 tory candidates talking about parking charges here in westbury when its their own party that brought them in.People then voted them in .
At county the way it works is when a motion is brought up the conservatives and Liberal democrats use the whip ie everyone of their councillors are told they have to vote the way they are told by their party leader and they follow like sheep.

What needs to happen is more Independents come in and vote with common sense and their own minds not a political machine casting orders out.

I'm glad business wasn't affected yesterday by the carpark charges Badger, and long may it be so, but it does make me wonder wether those parked up yesterday, new of the impending charge when they got there, and will it change there shopping habits in future?.I sincerely hope this doesn't affect the town.

If I'm doing something that takes 5 mins parking (using the toilets, collecting a prescription, buying a paper, popping to the bank) I am going to risk it by not getting a ticket. I point blank refuse to pay 40p to go to 1 shop or similar place for 1 thing!

the way i look at it is such ,people drive to Trowbridge shopping and are under the Impression the shires car park is a council car park when In fact Its a private car park and the council have nowt to do with it , Ive heard this so many times from people in westbury asking why its 30p in trowbridge when its 40p in westbury . To be honest I would rather have free parking here in our town , but its not to be , we can't these days park anywhere for free and most people expect to have to pay for the pleasure , i know its not popular but its fact. Westbury town council had paid for the free parking spaces before , thus giving shoppers the first hour free , but when the charge to westbury town council from the Conservative administration at County hall applied a ridiculous amount for each space which raised the figure comp-letly out of the town councils money and ability to be able to pay the amount demanded for the free parking. The blame fully lays with your kind Tory councillors they brought it in, against all protests across the county. Spanner yesterday remember was Easter weekend so at that time there seriously isnt going to be many people are around what with the weather , football on TV and other family events . Even In my shop on a usual saturday we are really busy until around 3pm then its one in one out without the queues we have during the day before this time, thats when myself and my staff grab our lunch and we are usually glad its slowed down a bit as we can hardly feel our feet lol

I have the same opinion as you Andy..so will not pay 40p out of principle,if i need anything i will get it in Morrison's,if i cant do that then i will go elsewhere..whats in Westbury highstreet that Morrison's or CO-OP don't sell anyway?

Whoever set the prices is a bit of a div, 40p an hour or £1.20 for 2?? I mean, what do they expect, people will moan and groan about it, at least make it 80p for 2 hours, or 60p for one, it makes no sense.
People will feel ripped off in getting a 2 hour ticket.

The people who have set the charges Monica are the Conservative administration at wiltshire council !
As to the other part from westburylad , perhaps you might enjoy collecting your prescriptions from the co-op and Morrison's along with buying property and picking up your dry cleaning etc oh I forgot haircuts , fish and chips a chinese and Indian meal , along with hardware ,banks etc. Oh you might want to go to other towns but In Wiltshire now you have to pay In council carparks , if not Dorset and Hampshire are not that far away but hang on they are charging for parking to
