Treasure every moment that you have! Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is mystery. Today is a gift. That’s why it’s called the present!

My favourite view, as its so evocative of being brought to stay with my grandparents, while my father was stationed abroad is Eric Ravilious' Train Landscape. The original is in Aberdeen Art Gallery, which I have been up to see, and I have a print above my desk.

Ready for launch
I have always loved the White Horse, from being a child, walking up there from Station rd, to family gatherings playing cricket/rounders/ to visiting it now with my children and getting the kite out for watching them run about......... I also love the drive through towards Bratton, and up to the Horse that way, very scenic. I love watching the ParaGliders and also the Kite buggy boarders.

Really great photos - all of them. I can nearly see my house in Steeple on OC's.
Am I right was it once 'invaded' by Travellers, and the Police had to sort it out.
I don't like the new fence up their personally, and it needs toilets!

My sons friend took them, her dad flew the glider and she took the pics, and yes there was an invasion of Hippies up there years ago, it caused quite a stir at the time. And to CC---10.4

I don't know if anyone knows who philipareed is but these videos are worth knowing about: A trip from Westbury White Horse to the Co-op http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--b4k9OM2JMlots more to the right including from Westbury to Trowbridge. marked May 2009. The sunset from the White Horse is really good. I can't find anything to do with the 'hippie invasion' but I did find a reference to Hawkwind giving a free concert up there about June 1985.

The best I can come up with so far is throught this link, http://www.timothyjpmason.com/WebPages/Publications/riots.htm. The mention of Westbury is near the bottom of the article. HIPPIES IN SHOP-LIFT INVASION HUNDREDS of hippies went on a theft rampage yesterday. Shops and pubs in Westbury, Wiltshire, closed down after they were stripped bare of beer and food worth hundreds of pounds. Earlier, hippies ransacked a filling station at Roundway near Devizes. They grabbed £600-worth of batteries, sweets and canned drinks, plus £100-worth of petrol.

So you don't think "turfing over" the White Horse would be beneficial and allow Westbury to be more than the "Home of the (dubious history) White Horse" ??

So you don't think "turfing over" the White Horse would be beneficial and allow Westbury to be more than the "Home of the (dubious history) White Horse" ?? que humming Parry's "I was glad" to yourself while reading this Would London remove Big Ben Would New York knock down the Statue of Liberty Berlin the Brandenburg Gate Paris the Eifel Tower Westbury Patch over the White Horse Me thinks not Nice post to generate debate, but the White Horse is more than a mark on the hillside, it denotes one of the most important longbarrows, and hilltop forts, as well as the site of one of England's defining battles. Westbury is much more than a chalk mark on the hillside, Mike, which I think you know. Its not a hostage to the White Horse, neither is it to its Victorian mills or its swimming pool. Now turf over the cement works, there is a topic for beneficiality...................

What was the Cement Works will with suitable planning permission become a useful small industrial park as I understand it. The extra employment will help Westbury. I'm out of all this now so not sure what the future plans for the chimney are.
Mike H. and I have discussed the White Horse before. I personally think it could be a good idea if the town bought it (preferably for a nominal £1) and turn it into a tourist attraction for the area. Water and electricity are an issue, but a cafe designed carefully (with toilets!) I think would be a good draw for tourists with an interpretation centre featuring the horse and Alfred. I would have also thought an annual Microlight competition would be fun. It would be good for the town and local b&b's, pubs etc.
