I popped in for breakfast this morning and its already like a small village. But in three weeks they are opening a lot of new enhancements including a phone shop and more useful for me, a Tesco Direct collection desk (the nearest one at the moment is Shepton Mallet).

Obviously with Sainsbury's opening soon they will have more competition.

This is a tricky question. I'm just thnking through some ideas David Jenkins came up with at the Chamber of Commerce meeting yesterday about support for local businesses but there is no getting away from how business has changed on the High Street. There's not much I couldn't buy from Tesco's, though I do genuinely try to use local shops. I was brought up in a Greengrocer's in Barking and appreciate small shops, but they have to work very hard these days to offer something extra in terms of range or service to compete. I actually enjoy the charity shops and not sure why they get so knocked. Found some great books lately - especially the one on Japanese cookery.  Not sure its Tescos (or Morrisons or whatever) fault - no one forces people to shop there.
