Mike C-M has already talked about the shame of the situation with the staff at the One Stop shop. But I walked around the outside of the new store yesterday and was amazed at how quick they have got it ready. All the signage is done and they were busy fitting it out.

As part of the opening celebrations, a donation of £500 will be given to the Royal United Hospital in Bath’s Space to Grow appeal, which is raising cash for a state-of-the-art Neo-natal care unit.

A good thing but I hope they remember to be generous to charities and organisation in this town.

Tesco's continue to expand with plans for a major new store in Bath.

The big new Sainsbury's in Trowbridge seems to be nearly complete but didn't have an opening date that I could see.

Knowing Tesco's expansion plans, there will be a Tesco store (not express) in most towns the size of Westbury within 10 years.

Waitrose seem to have the right idea they treat the staff very well and staff share in the profits , I know what store I will be supporting ?
I feel extremly sorry for the one stop staff without a job and families to support  and slung out of work , the £500 tescos are donating to charity  Sad
Banana blues gives more than that away nearly every month to charities around town and we are a tiny tiny buisness

What is the point of giving £500 to charity (they probably hold more than this in the Directors petty cash box) when their actions in putting people out of work is going to cost the country (i.e. the taxpayer including their own customers) many thousands in benefits. It's not as if Tesco is struggling is it?

Just been talking about this in the Heritage Centre. One good thing about Cooper's was they did give to local causes in the town. None of us could think of anything Morrison's had done for the town yet (or am I being unfair). I remember being told Marks & Spencer's in Trowbridge (before they went of course) had £100 / annum to give to local causes. Both Tesco's, Morrison's and the Co-op do have national charity schemes but unlike Mike and other good local shops like to name just one The Gas Cupboard, these schemes are very complicated and don't help with small local causes where often a few hundred pounds can make a real difference. The Local Area Board (and the annual Town Council grants) are helping to fill that gap but the more shops and businesses can help locally the better.

Although Co-op have their national charities, they also have a local regional fund, and I remember some cause in Westbury receiving a grant, I think it was last year.

I was asked to mention the situation of the staff from One Stop on here but see Mike has already beat me to it.

Big bucks means little regard for people often.

This proves just that.
