Me and B went to the Cedars Hotel for a meal on Friday night.  It's only a short walk away from home, we wanted to go somewhere new, and to be honest the last time we went to old favourite the Garden House (long time ago now!!) it was ok but not great.
From the nicely balanced menu we chose - Starters - B had mussels, which were excellent, I had a black pudding/prosciutto/mushroom based salad, which had a lovely, earthy dressing (and was also clever use of breakfast ingredients for a hotel!).  Main - we both had sirloin, pretty much cooked to perfection and a pleasingly retro peppercorn sauce - that wasn't too rich.  Sweet - B had a cheesecake, which was very good but rather too large a portion, I had a chocolate mousse, that (considering the quality of the rest of the food) I expected to be rich and dark but was too sweet and more like a goo than a mousse - this was the disappointment of the meal as it felt a bit cheap.  Followed up with coffee.  Including 2 bottles of wine (yes!!), a whisky, a pint of Ferret (good beer, very important), cost £89.  Which i would say is about right, apart from the overpricing of the alcohol.
Service was good, the young waitress was polite but wasn't professional in the way the waitress at the Garden House is (is she still there?).  We were the only people there (apart from some guests) and given it's a hotel i would hope for them it is busier during the week.  The host could have been a bit chirpier, too.   The decor was very traditional, but also pleasant and restrained -  love the fireplaces -  would recommend for families, taking relatives, couples, etc etc.
4 stars out of 5, not perfect, but would definitely go again.

Just got back from there - business breakfast with the Chamber of Commerce. DON'T ask for a vegetarian breakfast - really unimaginative and boring. Coffee was good though.

One of the training companies said that in their experience of running adult literarcy classes, 60% of adults have a reading age of about 11. No wonder The Sun and The Mirror sell so well!

But that's because 60% of adults that attend an adult literacy class  probably do have a reading age of about 11. The other 40% probably have a reading age of 9.  Roll Eyes
