Fifty years ago the M1 opened and our love-hate affair with service stations was born. But what do they tell us about Britain today?

On the way to my parents (near Ipswich) I stopped at South Mimms s/station. £1.60 to take out £10 in cash and coffee ar £2.50 cup! The toilets were clean though. On the way back I drove across country and near Swindon stopped at a Little Chef (didn't know they were still going). Toilets were flooded, service good but coffee and a pancake nearly £6. Rip off.

Thanks for that. I've been waiting for something else to moan about. That service station deserved "sorry, I've left my wallet behind".

We travel to northampton every 4 or 5 weeks and find that tesco at abingdon is about halfway  so stop there for toilets and a meal you can get an allday breakfast of bacon, sausage, beans, hash browns black pudding, scrambled egg or fried egg, fried bread or toast and a mug of coffee, for £5 plus your points.
