I think they should come up with a coating that can be cleaned so it dosent need repainting so often.

They had one before...it's called chalk.

When I first learnt about the chalk I thought it was sacrilege to cover it in cement. Realistically I don't think chalk could take the wear and the horse would vanish if left as chalk.

What is that one on the left going towards Salisbury called? It looks like a crown. That one appears to be chalk but isn't covered with people every day so doesn't suffer from abrasion.

Do you mean the one near Codford? If so that's the ANZAC Australian army badge. The Aussies were stationed there during world war one and two.

That's the one. I have a picture round here somewhere of it. If no one's about you can drive in the field opposite and get quite a good shot at it.

bit off topic, but there is a lot about the anzacs on Sutton Veny's site. Particulalry moving for me is visiting the churchyard where their victims of the 1919 flu epidemic are buried.

I didn't realise Sassoon was so 'local'.  Thanks for that; I'll read it properly later and maybe even re-read my book of Sassoon's poems I bought a few years ago.
