Ettie,

Despite my comments to Charlie, I agree with you. Charlie and I both agree that in future we look after Westbury only, the whole of Westbury (not just the town centre, sorry Russell) and nothing but Westbury. We will upset a few, but, what the heck, we've both been married long enough to get used to being wrong!

Just to add insult to injury, I read in The Wiltshire Times that the Post Office is to be at the Co-op. Do they mean the Co-op on the edge of our town? If so, isn't that rather a long way for the older people to get there and back again? We can't win for losing can we?!! Good job we're made of stern stuff!

I like the idea that people from out of town really care about our countryside and I will support their right to campaign, (whethe  I support their cause I still dont know).
As for popping champagne corks on the white horse that sounds like a rather jolly way of spending the afternoon up there!    Smiley

I just noticed this letter on the WT website...

Quote
The decision over the need or not of a bypass around Westbury was always going to be one that could divide the community we live in.

That is why I always recommended that, in a spirit of openess and accountability, an independent Inspector be sought to make the decision for us after all the evidence and opinion had been given.

This is a historical issue for our community and I respect all opinions that have been given as all have merit. The balance found by the inspector in his judgement was for the environment and quality of life, and after years of fighting for these issues, and in particular for the health of future generations, I am pleased he has done so.

If we can but only cast the role of the Lafarge Chimney into the realms of history and pull it down and make safe the quarry, then I do believe our community will have a real environmental resource worthy of our people and of their future families.

David Levy, The Air That We Breathe Network, Southcroft, Chapmanslade.

This letter leaves me slightly confused, this guy was/is campaigning against the cement works chimney, from which the plume "sometimes" grounds and "may" cause some pollution. Yet he seems to be overjoyed when the main polluters (HGVs etc on the A350) are left to do exactly that for next few decades. He doesn't seem too bothered about the "air that we breathe"   Huh

I dont see how the bypass would significantly reduce pollution - especially as the increaed capacity bypass would most certianly have more traffic on it than goes through westbury now.  In fact, the bypass would route the pollution into our lovely countryside whereas at the moments a lot of it simply sticks to the buildings of, and in the lungs of, the lucky people of westbury.

It was interesting in the WT Letters today to note that Patrick Kinnersley, Secretary of White Horse Alliance who last week boasted that we had saved "our town", lives in West Wellow.

For your interest, West Wellow is on the A36 well south of Salisbury and just off the M27!!

if a village has a BA13 post code then I would say its part of Westbury.

I do think its wrong to say if you don't live in Westbury then you are not allowed to express an opinion.
So if you don't live in America you are not allowed to discuss Obama.
If your not in the army your not allowed to discuss War. Surely you dismissing someones opinion because you don't agree and he does not live within 2 miles of the town centre makes you sound like another counciller

Agreed.  WHile I think its misleading and wrong for anyone who doesnt live here to describe it as "their town" I 100%, naye 1000%, support their right to campaign for or against a bypass.  To think otherwise would be the sort of nimbyism and narrow mindedness that is so campaigned against.

I do believe that people referring to the damage to the countryside that the bypass WOULD cause as "our" countryside have a right to do so.  Those who refer to pollution in "Our town" who dont live here are obviously wrong.   BUT Chapmanslade is only just down the road and I really would have no complaint about aneighbouring village referring to Wetsbury as "Our town" - rather that than Frome.

I honestly, truly, have sat on the fence not sure whether to support or go against the bypass but its clear to me that the comments from some - not all - of the more voiciferous pro campaigners have revealed their agendas to be nothing more than wanting to stop the traffic going past THEIR front door and I have to ask - when you bought your house, did you HONESTLY think traffic was going to reduce??

West Wellow, I know it well, drive through it three days a week going to work    Wink

Yokel: I also support their right to object to the scheme, in fact I said that in my statement at the regulatory committee meeting in July 2007. However, I went on to say that the local people, those directly affected by the proposals, one way of the other, should have more of a say than those who don't even live in the region.

I bought my house because it was the most economic solution, a smaller house on Leigh Park would have cost £20,000 more. Yes it's on the main road, but when I bought it the HGV traffic was manageable. The A36 closure at Limpley Stoke in 2003 put paid to that as a lot of the HGV drivers realised going through Westbury was easier than going through Bath, after the A36 was re-opened they kept coming through Westbury.

I only became involved in the pro-bypass campaign in 2004 by which time I could have up sticks and sold my house for nearly twice as much as I paid for it in 2000. I'm not going to apologise for trying to improve my standard of life, especially when it would also improve the standard of life for hundreds of others too.

The A350 traffic does NOT go past my house, but I feel for those who suffer from it.

The A350 traffic does not go anywhere near Chapmanslade.

Why do you appear to support anyone outside of town who wants to interfere in the lives and well-being of residents? Do you consider that, because their views are apparently more in line with yours, that they are therefore more acceptable?

As regards "the other councillor", although I might not always agree with him, at least he does consider Westbury.
