Three common scams I have come across, not solely associated with ebay.

Scam 1

An advertiser offers a vehicle for sale. Someone from abroad offers to buy it and sends a cheque and makes arrangements for an associate to collect the vehicle at the docks. Cheque arrives and is cashed by the seller, after three days it seems the cheque has cleared and hands the vehicle to the purchaser who drives off into the sunset.

A few days later the sellers bank debits the account due to the cheque being stolen. Seller has no money and no vehicle. It would seem the three day rule for cheques is an urban myth.

Scam 2

Similar to the above one. However the purchaser sends a cheque for more than the amount advertised. This is quickly followed up with an email along the lines "sorry my accountant has sent the incorrect cheque please can you hand the difference (in cash of course) to my associate when he collects the car. Again the cheque is stolen and not only do you lose the vehicle but lose a shed load of cash as well.

Scam 3

Dodgy seller from abroad places an imaginary item for sale on ebay usually with an unbelievable 'buy it now' price.  Buyer is then told to send the cash via Western Credit Union. Item never arrives. Western Union Credit transfers are generally un-traceable. No much point in reporting it to the police as the offence has been committed abroad and UK police have no jurisdiction. The best that can happen is the details sent to the police abroad, but with an un-traceable money transfer don't hold your breath.

Be nice if Paypal weren't such 'grabbers' 10% cut on every transaction even ones under £10. With listing and final value fees as well from Ebay any money made from a sale soon disappears.   Undecided
